Linux distribution KaOS has released version 2024.03 based on KDE Plasma 6
KaOS, an independent Linux distribution centered on Qt and KDE, has announced the release of version 2024.03. This March release introduces a new stable ISO and a significant update to KDE Plasma 6 stable, which was launched a fortnight ago.
The latest version introduces two notable upgrades: a transition to the most recent version of the application framework, Qt, and a shift to Wayland, the modern Linux graphics platform. These upgrades are expected to enhance Plasma’s security, efficiency, and performance, while also improving compatibility with modern hardware.
The new release also introduces partial support for High Dynamic Range (HDR) on Plasma on Wayland. This feature will render richer and deeper colors on supported monitors and software, enhancing the visual experience for games, videos, and other visual creations.
KaOS 2024.03 introduces a refreshed look and feel. The Midna theme, exclusive to KaOS, has been fully revamped, and a new default sound theme, Ocean, has been introduced to replace the Oxygen sound theme.
The new version also marks the removal of GTK2 from the KaOS repositories. With the 8.4.0 version of Ardour, the last major application requiring GTK2, now using an internal YTK, GTK2 has been completely phased out.
The base system updates include a move to a toolchain based on GCC 13.2.1, Glibc 2.39 & Binutils 2.42, Opencv 4.9.0, Linux 6.7.9 kernel, Systemd 253.17, ZFS 2.2.3, KMod 32, OpenSSL 3.2, Gstreamer 1.24.0, and Mesa 24.0.2.
Finally, this release includes a new package, SystemdGenie, a tool developed by KDE for seamless integration of systemd management into the Plasma 6 desktop.
