Canonical extends Ubuntu LTS support for Ubuntu Pro customers to 12 years

Canonical has unveiled Legacy Support, an add-on for Ubuntu Pro, which extends security and support coverage for Ubuntu LTS (Long Term Support) releases to 12 years. The add-on will be applicable for Ubuntu 14.04 LTS and later versions.

Typically, Ubuntu LTS releases receive five years of standard security maintenance on the primary Ubuntu repository. However, Ubuntu Pro extends this to 10 years for both the main and universe repositories, granting access to an extensive, secure open-source software library for enterprises and end users.

Ubuntu Pro customers now have the option to buy an additional two years of security maintenance and support with the new Legacy Support add-on. This can provide organizations with stability as they strategize and implement their migration to a more recent operating system.

The coverage period for Ubuntu Pro for Ubuntu 14.04 LTS is set to conclude in April 2024. However, with the Legacy Support add-on, organizations using Ubuntu 14.04 LTS can secure an extra two years of extended security maintenance.

This extended coverage allows IT managers to devise a comprehensive upgrade plan for the next LTS, while software architects can focus on the application level, leveraging the support provided by Canonical’s team.
