Apple reverses decision to remove progressive web apps from iOS 17.4 in EU
Apple has reversed its previous decision to remove Progressive Web Apps (PWAs) from iOS 17.4 in the European Union. Originally, the decision was made to comply with the Digital Markets Act and to address support for alternative browser engines on the iPhone, but several organizations, including the Open Web Advocacy, criticized the move, fearing it would harm web apps' viability and possibly prompt an EU investigation into Apple's decision.
Apple initially justified its decision by citing the technical challenges of developing a new integration architecture for alternative browser engines, emphasizing the complicated security and privacy issues involved. The company also noted the low user adoption of Home Screen web apps. However, the company has now decided to continue supporting Home Screen web apps in the EU, ensuring they remain built on WebKit, which aligns with iOS's security and privacy models for native apps. This means there will be no change in how these apps are added and run, whether through Safari or other means.
Apple has also committed to restoring existing Home Screen web app functionality with the release of iOS 17.4 in early March. The company will update its Developer website with this new information, while also retaining its original explanation.

A victory for the open web against one of the big data hoarders. 👏
A bigger victory would be to motivate people to ditch every apple product possible (by finding alternatives here in AlternativeTo)
