Proton launches dedicated Windows app for its password manager suite with offline mode

Proton has expanded its Proton Pass password manager suite by launching a dedicated desktop app for Windows. This new app complements its existing iOS, Android, and web browser solutions and features an offline mode, allowing users to access their stored credentials without an internet connection or browser.

The offline feature uses the Argon2 hashing algorithm to protect passwords, even without an internet connection. To access the advanced offline mode, users need a subscription to Proton Pass Plus or Unlimited plans, which cost $4.99 per month or $23.88 per year.

The new Windows client provides end-to-end encryption for all data, including passwords, email addresses, login usernames, credit card numbers, and other sensitive information, but it also generates random email addresses for online signups, enhancing user privacy and security. Windows users can download the desktop client now from Proton's website, and the company plans to release dedicated Proton Pass apps for macOS and Linux later in 2024.
