GIMP releases final development version 2.99.18 ahead of anticipated GIMP 3.0
GIMP, the open-source cross-platform image editor, has released its final development version, 2.99.18, ahead of the anticipated GIMP 3.0. As a development version, it is a work-in-progress release and is not recommended for production use due to its potential instability. This release is primarily aimed at early issue detection and community feedback.
Version 2.99.18 introduces enhancements to the Space Invasion project, a codename for GIMP's initiative to improve color correctness. It also features improved color algorithms, initial non-destructive editing capabilities, and enhancements to font handling. Auto-expanding layers, new snapping options, and an improved user interface and style are also part of this release. Additionally, the Welcome Dialog has been expanded.
The update also focuses on file format compatibility. Existing formats have been improved, and import and export support for new ones have been added. This includes improved interoperability between GIMP and Photoshop.
GIMP 2.99.18 also supports the import and export of Farbfeld, a simple sRGB image format designed for external parsing, piping, and compression. The release also includes support for the new Swatchbooker palette format, Wayland tablet pad interaction improvements, and numerous API updates.
Following the release of 2.99.18, GIMP has entered a feature freeze. The focus is now on bug-fixing, clean-up, and preparing for the first 3.0 release candidate.

If GIMP gets non destructive editing it will become a greater alternative to Photoshop than it is right now
