Meta to launch AI bots on Facebook, mimicking real users with profiles, bios, and pictures

Meta is set to introduce AI bots on Facebook that will interact with users as if they were real people, complete with profiles, bios, and pictures. These bots will generate and share content using AI, with stringent safeguards planned to ensure appropriateness, especially for young users.

This initiative is reminiscent of emerging "AI social media networks" like Butterflies or SocialAI, where real users interact with AI characters. To maintain transparency, AI profiles may feature a badge indicating they are bots. However, there is a risk that the platform could become overrun with AI accounts, potentially deterring users seeking genuine human interaction.

These AI bots could play a role in combating misinformation by identifying and clarifying fake news and moderating online disputes to encourage civil discussions (I wouldn't hold my breath on that). Despite these, user sentiment towards the AI bots is expected to be largely negative, with concerns about the authenticity of the platform.

Oh goodie more AI slop to slurp up for the already brainrotted masses and on top of they are letting feds use it.

I'm sure having an army of believable AI people fact-checking everything won't be abused to give certain viewpoints the illusion of credibility (or vice-versa).

Uh... Facebook is already plagued with AI bots, complete with 100% AI slop (e.g. "Shrimp Jesus", amen! 🙏). And Meta is now planning to... add more?

I can't see how this is helping at all...
