Decentralized video platform PeerTube has launched a limited mobile app for iOS & Android
PeerTube, the decentralized video-sharing platform, has launched a mobile application for iOS and Android. This app allows users to create a local account directly on their device, enabling access to features like watch lists, playlists, and favorites without needing to register on a specific platform. The app includes a search engine and an interface that allows users to explore the federation of PeerTube platforms, making it easier to find content tailored to their interests.
The app's design emphasizes the platforms hosting the videos and channels, providing a visual representation of the federation concept to users. This initial release is available on the Apple and Google app stores, with a version for F-Droid expected soon. The current build is limited, but further updates and enhancements are planned for 2025.
The limitation are imposed by the fear of being banned by App Store and Google Play because of not moderated videos. The F-Droid build will not suffer any limitation, any feed could be added, because "F" stands for Freedom (but also work with any other "F-" word).
Once the F-Droid app gets released soon™, this will definitely reach out to more of the people that embrace in open-source and decentralization (like me 😊), if not 100% drive them away from the greedy corporation that is YouTube.
It is a bit unfortunate that you can't download it with Obtainium yet (the latest GitHub release is October 30, 2024; no APK is available). However, I expect a lot out of them in the future.
