The OpenAI's ChatGPT Windows app is now available to all free users
OpenAI has made its ChatGPT app for Windows available to all free users in the Microsoft Store, expanding its accessibility beyond the initial ChatGPT Plus subscribers. This app includes a "companion window" feature, allowing it to stay open alongside other programs, similar to the macOS version. Users can activate this feature with a customizable hotkey, defaulting to "Alt + space," for uninterrupted interaction.
While the app offers the same ChatGPT search and Advanced Mode features as the web version, these remain exclusive to Plus subscribers, who pay a $20 monthly fee. However, free users can preview Advanced Mode for about 10 minutes to explore premium functionalities. The Windows app also includes the ability to upload images and a screenshot function for capturing and sharing images with ChatGPT, enhancing its visual processing capabilities.
With broader access, ChatGPT is positioned as a strong alternative to Microsoft Copilot, which has been integrated into the OS for some time now. Meanwhile, the macOS version has been updated with real-time integration with third-party apps, a feature not yet available on Windows.
