Nintendo to close Switch eShop and online services in China by 2026
Nintendo has announced the closure of the Switch eShop and all online services in China by 2026, including Nintendo Switch Online. The Switch eShop will cease selling games and software on March 31, 2026, and by May 15, 2026, Switch owners in China will lose access to downloading games, DLC, and redeeming codes. All other Nintendo Switch online services in the region will also end on the same date.
Tencent, Nintendo's partner responsible for managing sales in China, revealed the news. Despite the significant impact on one of the largest gaming markets globally, Nintendo has not provided any reasons for this decision.
As a form of compensation, the company is offering up to four free games to current Switch owners with active WeChat accounts. This offer is available from November 27, 2024, through March 31, 2026. Eligible players can choose from a selection of 12 games, including titles like Super Mario Odyssey, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe, Pokémon Let’s Go! Eevee, and Dr Kawashima’s Brain Exercises.
