Elementary OS 8 launches with a new Dock, improved multitasking, Flathub support, and more

elementary OS 8 has been launched, building upon Ubuntu 24.04 LTS and leveraging the Linux 6.8 kernel to enhance stability and hardware support. This release features a redesigned dock with a window spread view to improve multitasking, and a new Quick Settings menu for easy access to common actions like dark mode and session management.

The OS also introduces a blurred background effect on login, lock screens, and multitasking views. System settings have been improved with a revamped Applications panel for managing Flatpak permissions, updated power settings displaying battery levels for connected devices, and a simplified driver management interface. Flathub is integrated alongside elementary’s Flatpak repository in AppCenter, providing multiple app installation sources without having to manually sideload or configure an alt store.

Accessibility enhancements include screen reader integration and improved navigation in the first-run wizard. Additional updates include a redesigned Videos app, a new Fonts app, and updated cursors with color accents. Elementary OS 8 also offers a Wayland-based secure session (not default) and uses PipeWire as the default sound server for improved audio performance. Interested users can find all the details of the update in the official announcement.
