Solus 4.6 released with Linux kernel 6.10, Usr-Merge migration, and enhanced desktops
Solus, an independent Linux distribution, has released version 4.6, dubbed Convergence. This update includes enhancements to desktop environments, kernel updates, and expanded hardware support. Solus 4.6 features Linux kernels 6.10.13 and 6.6.54 LTS, alongside software updates such as Firefox 131.0.3, LibreOffice 24.2.5.2, Thunderbird 128.3.1, and Mesa 24.2.3. The updated kernel no longer includes AppArmor patches, reducing maintenance and allowing partial confinement for Snaps.
For multimedia users, each desktop edition of Solus 4.6 comes with specific software optimized for audio and video playback. The Usr-Merge initiative has reached its third stage, unifying system directories for all current users. Solus continues to use the Solus Software Center as its default graphical package manager, now with experimental support for GNOME Software and KDE Discover, enabling management of both Solus repository software and third-party Flatpaks.
The Budgie edition includes Budgie 10.9.2, featuring minor improvements and new default applications such as XReader, XViewer, and Engrampa. The GNOME Edition is updated to GNOME 46.5, while the Plasma Edition includes Plasma Desktop 6.1.5, KDE Frameworks 6.6.0, KDE Gear 24.08.1, and the KDE branch for QT 6.7.3. Solus 4.6 also offers the XFCE Desktop environment in beta.
