Valve launches Proton 8.0-5 with extended HDR support and more Windows games now playable
Valve has launched Proton 8.0-5, the latest version of its compatibility tool for Steam Play. Proton, based on Wine and additional components, allows Linux users to play Windows games.
The new release introduces HDR options for specific games on compatible hardware, including the Steam Deck OLED. The games that now support HDR are Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3, Resident Evil 7 Biohazard, Resident Evil Village, Hogwarts Legacy, Mass Effect Legendary Edition, Injustice 2, Alan Wake 2, and Devil May Cry 5.
Proton 8.0-5 extends official support to more Windows games for Linux, including Grotesque Tactics: Evil Heroes, Welcome to Princeland, Red Tie Runner, Simon the Sorcerer: 25th Anniversary Edition, and Assassin's Creed Mirage.
The release also includes improvements and bug fixes for games previously supported, such as Baldur's Gate 3, Cyberpunk 2077, Forza Horizon 5, Starfield, Witcher 3, Hogwarts Legacy, Halo Infinite, and many others.
Proton 8.0-5 addresses multiple memory leaks when playing videos in VRchat using AVPro and enhances support for VKB Gladiator NXT Evo and Virpil Constellation ALPHA-R when the hidraw device is accessible.
Finally, the new version updates several components. Wine Mono has been updated to version 8.1.0, dxvk to v2.3-21-g1b31aa5d, dxvk-nvapi to v0.6.4-20-g0a7c48b, and vkd3d-proton to v2.11-19-g0e681135.
