Microsoft Edge accused of stealing data settings from Chrome without user permission
Microsoft Edge is allegedly using aggressive methods to draw users away from Google Chrome by syncing data from Chrome during Windows updates, using an existing data import setting without user's permissions, and launching the browser with all active Google Chrome tabs after a system reboot. Again, it is worth noting that Edge has an option that allows users to "import browser data on each launch," but this is happening even without such active usage or explicit user consent, raising serious privacy concerns.
There's also a default option that activates during post-update setup, informing users that Microsoft Edge will regularly import data from other browsers on their Windows device (picture in the cover). This data includes favorites, browsing history, cookies, autofill data, extensions, settings, and other browsing data. Users are guided on how to disable this import setting during setup, but Microsoft also encourages users to accept this behavior by providing a "Not Now" option.
Numerous users on X have expressed their dissatisfaction, stating that Edge not only imports tabs but also opens social media sessions without prior user permission. Despite privacy concerns, Microsoft has not officially addressed the issue or confirmed if it's a bug, although this behavior aligns with the company's recent efforts to deter Chrome installations through intrusive surveys for interested users.
