Manga reader app Tachiyomi ceases development amid legal threats from Kakao Entertainment

Tachiyomi, the popular free and open source manga reader for Android, has recently announced discontinuation of active development due to legal threats from Kakao Entertainment. Tachiyomi provided its users with a customizable reading experience by enabling access to manga from various third-party online sources. Some of these sources included websites hosting pirated content, which contained copyrighted materials owned by Kakao.

Although Tachiyomi initially defended its position by stating it did not host any pirated content, the team has now confirmed that “with unanimous support from the fellow core contributors and support staff, the core Tachiyomi project will no longer be under active development due to recent events involving Kakao Entertainment Corp's threats”.

As a consequence of this decision, the team will be closing down the core GitHub repositories, shutting down official social media accounts, and repurposing the official Discord server into a general community for interested individuals.

While Tachiyomi may continue to function for the time being, there will be no further support or updates for the app or its official extensions. This decision has sparked disappointment and anger among many users. In the meantime, several forks of the software have already been created, though it remains uncertain how long these will remain viable.
