YouTube is shutting down its Premium Lite subscription plan

Google has communicated to its customers via email that the YouTube Premium Lite subscription plan will be discontinued. This ad-free tier, which was available at a lower price in certain European countries, will no longer be accessible after October 25. The plan was trialed for two years before this decision was made.

The Premium Lite plan was introduced in 2021 at a monthly rate of €6.99. It provided users with an ad-free experience across all YouTube apps and formats. However, it did not include other features that come with the Premium subscription, such as offline downloads, background playback, and YouTube Music benefits.

Following the discontinuation of the Premium Lite plan, existing subscribers will have two choices: revert to the ad-supported version of YouTube or opt for the more expensive YouTube Premium subscription, which includes YouTube Music.

In an attempt to retain its customers, YouTube is offering current Premium Lite subscribers a free one-month trial of the regular Premium subscription, regardless of whether they've tried it before.

hmm interesting, a pop-up asked me if I found this article interesting and I helpfully answered "No" then it asked me why and it auto-posted my reason as the above comment...

...but since the automation seems to want to make it public record, might as well elaborate: apart from the topic being kinda niche, it doesn't help that the tone is very monotonous thus doesn't engage the brain to keep reading, also it's kinda confusing to read (for example, "it did not include other features that come with the Premium subscription" is past tense as if the plan no longer exists, yet one paragraph earlier there is a claim the discontinuation will happen in future. another example, 3rd paragraph claims subs only have 2 choices, both of which involve paying, yet very next paragraph contradictorily alludes to "retaining" customers as if there was a 3rd choice of not paying)
