WordPress Blogs can now be followed in the Fediverse with the ActivityPub plugin
Automattic and WordPress design engineer, Matt Wiebe, recently announced on X (formerly Twitter) that the ActivityPub plugin has released its version 1.0. This new release allows WordPress blogs to be followed within the Fediverse, a decentralized network that powers services like Mastodon, once the plugin is activated. The integration also enables replies from the Fediverse to be received back as comments on the WordPress blog.
Automattic, the company behind WordPress, acquired the ActivityPub plugin in March 2023. They pledged their commitment to the Fediverse, and this release appears to be a significant step towards that promise. The 1.0 version of the ActivityPub plugin brings a host of new features, enhancements, and bug fixes, making it operational for all WordPress blog owners.
Currently, the plugin supports self-hosted WordPress blogs. However, Wiebe hinted at imminent support for WordPress.com blogs. This move by WordPress to support ActivityPub aligns with the recent trend of other publishers integrating with the Fediverse.
