Threema unveils new desktop app with multi-device support and advanced privacy protection

Threema, the messenger renowned for its rigorous data protection and rock-solid security, has unveiled a new desktop app, currently available to all iOS users as a stable beta version. The app has been redesigned from scratch, featuring a thoroughly modern UI and a significantly enhanced response time.

In addition to these improvements, the desktop app also introduces multi-device support. This allows for continued usage on the computer even when the linked smartphone is either turned off or not connected to the internet.

In a continued focus on user privacy, Threema has implemented a unique system to manage message synchronization between devices. The system involves a “mediator server” that is logically separated from the chat server. The chat server, responsible for forwarding messages between Threema IDs, does not have access to the identity of the messages stored on the mediator server. Conversely, the mediator server does not have knowledge of the Threema ID of a device group. This separation ensures a higher level of privacy and security for users.
