Google pledges 10-year automatic updates for Chromebooks, surpassing other OS
Google has announced that Chromebooks will receive automatic updates for 10 years, a commitment that surpasses any other operating system currently. These updates, occurring every four weeks, will start from next year and will enhance the security, stability, and features of Chromebooks for a decade after their release.
Starting in 2024, Chromebooks released from 2021 and onwards will automatically receive these 10-year updates. For Chromebooks released prior to 2021 and currently in use, users and IT administrators will have the option to extend the automatic updates to 10 years from the platform's release, following their last automatic update.
In addition to these update enhancements, Google is collaborating with partners to manufacture Chromebooks with more post-consumer recycled materials (PCR). The tech giant is also introducing new power-efficient features and expedited repair processes.
