WhatsApp tests email sign-ins for enhanced security measures
WhatsApp is contemplating introducing email sign-ins to enhance its security measures. Presently, a WhatsApp account is tied to a user's phone number, utilizing two-factor authentication and encrypted Google Drive backups for security.
As part of its security measures, WhatsApp has implemented account protect and device verification, as well as the ability to silence unknown callers. The proposed email sign-in feature is expected to further improve account security, especially in situations where a user loses their phone, has it stolen, or experiences verification code problems when setting up WhatsApp on a new device.
At present, WhatsApp employs email for PIN protection setup and reset. The new email verification feature, currently being tested by a select group of beta users in version v2.23.16.15, could extend this functionality. The public release date of this feature is still unclear, but it shouldn't take much longer.
