OpenAI extends 'Custom Instructions' feature to all ChatGPT free plan users

OpenAI has made its 'custom instructions' feature available to all ChatGPT users, including those on the free plan. Initially introduced in July for ChatGPT Plus subscribers, the feature allows users to set specific preferences for ChatGPT's responses, removing the need for repeated instructions during AI interactions.

The custom instructions enable users to set desired character counts for responses, change the AI's tone, and request responses in specific languages or exclude certain languages. The feature was initially launched to help teachers generate lesson plans without repeatedly specifying grade levels. OpenAI emphasizes 'steerability' based on feedback from users in 22 countries as a crucial aspect of the feature.

As we mentioned at the beginning, the feature that was previously exclusive to ChatGPT Plus subscribers, who paid $20 per month, is now accessible to both free and Plus users on both iOS and Android. The feature can be used even when chat history is turned off, offering users more flexibility. Users can access this feature by clicking on their name and choosing the "Custom instructions" option. OpenAI plans to roll out this feature to users in the EU and U.K. soon.
