Mozilla to enhance Firefox user experience with importation of Chrome extensions
Mozilla is set to enhance the user experience on its Firefox web browser by enabling the importation of extensions from other browsers. Initially, the feature will only support a limited selection of extensions from Google Chrome. Some Firefox 116 users already have access to this feature as part of an ongoing experiment. However, all other users can manually activate the feature by navigating to about:config and setting the browser.migrate.chrome.extensions.enabled switch to true.
To facilitate this feature, Mozilla keeps a mapping list of extension IDs corresponding between Google Chrome and Firefox. If Firefox identifies a compatible extension installed in Chrome, it automatically downloads the equivalent Firefox version. Currently, the mapping list comprises 73 extension pairs, with plans to add more in the future.
The feature presently supports the importation of popular extensions such as uBlock Origin, LastPass, AdGuard AdBlocker, and Ghostery. This development is part of Mozilla's broader strategy to help users seamlessly transition their browsing data, including history, bookmarks, and saved credentials, from other browsers to Firefox.
