European TikTok users will soon be able to Opt Out of personalized feeds in compliance with Digital Services Act
TikTok recently announced that its European users will soon be able to opt out of personalized feeds, in line with the August 28th deadline set by the region's authorities under the Digital Services Act (DSA).
The DSA requires large social media platforms, including TikTok, Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook, to offer users the choice to decline personalized recommendations, which are usually based on tracked and profiled user activity.
Following the new regulations, TikTok users can now choose if they want their For You page (FYP) to be powered by algorithms. If they opt out of personalization, their FYP will feature popular videos from their area and around the world.
The DSA also mandates more transparency in content moderation, so TikTok will now give users more details than before about its decisions.
Furthermore, the act prohibits targeted advertising towards children, meaning TikTok users under 18 will no longer see personalized ads on the platform.
