Amazon has acquired Fig, a startup that help developers work with the command line

Amazon has recently acquired Fig, a startup that improves the developer experience at the command line interface with tools including autocomplete and collaboration. Brendan Falk, CEO and co-founder of Fig, confirmed the acquisition in a recent blog post, stating that Amazon would be incorporating Fig's technology, and that the team, including its two co-founders, would be joining Amazon's cloud subsidiary AWS.

This acquisition aligns with Amazon's ongoing strategy to create systems that alleviate the pressures of building and shipping applications from software engineers and operations. Falk suggests that the acquisition is primarily aimed at enhancing the developer experience, potentially in relation to the emerging generative AI revolution.

Amazon's acquisition of Fig could be seen as a move to compete with GitHub Copilot and other similar tools, further expanding its foothold in the developer tools market. Falk added that AWS views generative AI as a significant technological shift that will transform the way its customers build, and the Fig team is excited to be part of this vision.

Fig has confirmed that existing users will continue to have access to Fig and receive support. However, new signups are currently on hold while Amazon works on integrating Fig with AWS.
