Twitter begins sharing Ad revenue with users through new monetization program

X has begun distributing ad revenue to users through its monetization program, which shares a portion of the income generated from ads displayed in creators' reply threads. Payments are received via the Stripe account associated with Creator Subscriptions. To qualify, users must be subscribed to Twitter Blue or Verified Organizations and achieve a minimum of "5M+ Tweet impressions in each month for the last 3 months". They must also pass a human review for Creator Monetization Standards.

The revenue sharing program has been well-received by users, with the payout amounts exceeding creators' expectations and boosting engagement on the platform. Dogecoin co-founder Billy Markus, known as Shibetoshi Nakamoto on Twitter, has received the highest payout of $37,000. Elon Musk has stated that the revenue share will be retroactive to February 3rd, 2023, the date when the feature was first suggested.

The program is set to broaden later this month, allowing all eligible creators to apply. However, certain creators and content types are excluded from monetization, including sexual content, pyramid schemes, violence, criminal behavior, gambling, drugs, alcohol, and unauthorized copyrighted content. The program's requirement of 5 million tweet impressions may most probably favor top creators and potentially deter smaller creators. The introduction of this program has also been ironically received by some users, considering that Twitter has faced legal challenges over unpaid severance checks and rent for office spaces. Meanwhile, Meta's Threads, a potential competitor to Twitter, has seen rapid growth with 10 million sign-ups within the first seven hours of its launch.
