New update allows addition of URLs and Web Apps to home screen on iOS devices via Google Chrome

The latest update to Google Chrome for iOS includes an option to add URLs or Progressive Web Apps to the Home Screen on iPhones and iPads, a feature previously exclusive to Apple's Safari. This addition, made possible by Apple's iOS 16.4, allows users to save preferred websites for quick access from the Home Screen. Users will need the newest version of Google Chrome for iOS and a device running on iOS 16.4 or later to utilize this feature.

The process of adding a web app shortcut involves opening Chrome, visiting the desired website, tapping the share button in the address bar, and selecting "Add to Home Screen". After customizing the site name and confirming the URL, tap "Add" to finalize the process.

Web apps added to the iOS Home Screen behave like regular apps, eliminating the need for redirection to Safari or other browsers. These web apps can also send push notifications on iOS 16.4 or later. Apple's increased acceptance of web apps is also seen in macOS Sonoma, where Mac users can save websites as web apps via Safari. This move is seen by some as Apple's way of addressing allegations of anti-competitive practices related to the App Store.
