WhatsApp introduces Channels for broadcast-based messaging and large-group conversations

WhatsApp the popular messaging app owned by Meta, is introducing an exciting new feature called Channels. Some time ago, we had become aware of its existence thanks to the development builds, but now it is available in the public release for everyone. This feature is specifically designed to enable broadcast-based messaging, targeting entities such as NGOs, medical research institutions, and fact-checking bodies, rather than individual creators. Unlike Instagram, where channel announcements are sent via direct messages, Channels messages on WhatsApp will appear in a separate tab called Updates, alongside with WhatsApp Stories.

Admins have the power to send one-way broadcasts via Channels, including various multimedia formats such as text, photos, videos, stickers, and even polls. To enhance user experience, a searchable directory will be available, allowing users to find channels relevant to their interests, hobbies, sports teams, and local updates from officials. This directory will make it easy for users to discover and connect with channels that resonate with them. However, it is important to note that Channels only support one-way conversations, meaning that users cannot reply to the messages.

WhatsApp remains committed to safeguarding privacy and protecting personal information. Admins' phone numbers and profile photos will not be displayed to followers. Moreover, following a channel will not reveal the user's phone number to the admin or other followers. In terms of data storage, channel history will only be retained on WhatsApp's servers for up to 30 days, and there will be options to make updates disappear faster from followers' devices. Admins can also exercise control by blocking screenshots and forwards from their channels. Admins will have full control over who can follow their channel and whether it should be discoverable in the directory. While Channels are not initially end-to-end encrypted, WhatsApp is actively exploring the possibility of introducing end-to-end encrypted channels for limited audiences, particularly for non-profit or health organizations.

Excitingly, there is potential for admins to monetize their channels by leveraging WhatsApp's payment services and the option to promote their channels in the directory, thereby increasing visibility and awareness. The overall goal of WhatsApp's Channels feature is to become a preferred platform for organizations and authorities to issue updates and alerts to users, while also facilitating large-group conversations in a seamless and convenient manner.

WhatsApp plans to launch Channels initially in Colombia and Singapore, where they will collaborate with prominent global voices and select organizations to gain insights and refine the experience. The company intends to expand Channels to more countries in the future, making it accessible for anyone to create and manage a channel.

Despite the introduction of Channels, WhatsApp emphasizes that its primary focus remains on private messaging among friends, family, and communities, and evidence of this is the constant addition of new features to the platform during the last few months, such as the ability to edit messages and the Chat Lock feature, which aim to match the services offered by other renowned apps like Telegram. Channels complement this focus by providing a platform for efficient and controlled information dissemination, ensuring that WhatsApp continues to cater to the diverse needs of its users.
