Red Hat now restraining Red Hat Enterprise Linux-related sources to CentOS Stream

Red Hat has recently made a significant announcement that CentOS Stream will now be the sole repository for public Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL)-related source code releases. This means that the company will no longer publish sources for RHEL on git.centos.org.

However, paying Red Hat customers will still have access to the proper RHEL sources via the Red Hat Customer Portal, in accordance with their subscription agreement. The company stated that “the engagement around CentOS Stream, the engineering levels of investment, and the new priorities we're addressing for customers and partners now make maintaining separate, redundant, repositories inefficient.”

The move has caused concern among users of CentOS-based Linux distributions such as Rocky Linux, AlmaLinux, and Oracle Linux. Some users on social media have speculated that this decision could potentially lead to the death of these Linux distros. However, a Red Hat engineer has clarified that “the Developer subscription is completely free and still allows access to RHEL and its source code.” On the Rocky Linux forum, a team member has also reassured that users can “rest assured this is not the 'death' of Rocky.”

While this move may be controversial, Red Hat assures its customers that they are making changes to better address the needs of their customers and partners. The company is committed to maintaining a high level of engagement around CentOS Stream and investing in its engineering to provide better solutions for its users.
