Overwatch 2 PvE Hero Mode has been cancelled by Blizzard, but PVE missions will arrive in the future
Blizzard Entertainment has announced that the highly anticipated Overwatch 2 PvE Hero Mode, introduced in 2019 with the launch of the game, has been canceled and is no longer part of the developers' plans.
The announcement came during a dev chat Twitch stream on Tuesday afternoon, where executive producer Jared Neuss justified the decision, explaining that this will allow the developers to focus on the live service component of multiplayer PvP, such as new maps, heroes, modes, and so on.
In any case, not all of the original ideas will be discarded, and the developers plan to release cooperative missions that will expand the story and lore of the Overwatch universe. In fact the team released the roadmap for the next few months of Overwatch 2, revealing that during Season 6 (mid-August - early September) PvE missions will be introduced, even if they are not the real "Hero mode" announced separately in the past, with its own progression system and the ability to equip heroes with different abilities than those used in PvP.
The PvE Hero Mode was one of the most touted additions to Overwatch 2 when it was first announced. However, since then, there has been silence about when it would come and what it would feature. Now, many players are disappointed about the cancellation of the standalone Story mode, which was announced with great enthusiasm and were eagerly waiting to try it out by 2023, as was promised earlier by Blizzard.

That is definitely a bummer. With such an appealing lore and the potential that Overwatch has, it would have been what would have marked a new age in the franchise (at least for me), and what would have truly distinguished the first game from the second.
