LinkedIn to shut down InCareer app in China, resulting in 716 layoffs
LinkedIn has announced its decision to shut down its China-focused jobs app, InCareer. Launched in December 2021, the app failed to compete with rivals like MaiMai, leading to the company's decision to close it down. This move will result in 716 layoffs, and eligible employees in the U.S. will receive severance pay, continuing health coverage, and career transition services.
LinkedIn CEO Ryan Roslansky cited fierce competition and a challenging macroeconomic climate as reasons for the app's failure. The company plans to wind down the InCareer app in China by August 9, 2023, as part of its planned changes for China and its Global Business Organization (GBO). However, LinkedIn will retain the Talent, Marketing, and Learning business in China and will help companies operating in China to hire, market, and train abroad.
As part of its reorganization, LinkedIn is also shutting down its Business Productivity team and reducing some management roles. However, the company plans to add 250 new roles in specific segments of its operations, new business, and account management teams, starting May 15, 2023. Additionally, LinkedIn is investing in strategic growth areas, including AI-powered tools that can write profile bios and draft messages for job seekers.
