Video editor Flowblade releases version 2.12 with faster proxy rendering and much more
The free and open-source video editor, Flowblade, has rolled out its version 2.12 with significant structural updates. Among these are the Data Stores feature and the expansion of the Sequence to accommodate up to 21 tracks.
In this new version, Flowblade allows users to specify the storage location for project data such as proxy clips, container clip renders, thumbnails, and audio levels. This option can be set for each project individually, and data can be destroyed on a per-project basis without affecting others.
Version 2.12 also introduces a paged, auto-centered view of the timeline in the vertical dimension. This update retains the stable view benefits of the previous approach while increasing the maximum number of tracks available to users.
Another enhancement in this release is the capability to render proxies using the FFMPEG CLI app, provided the system supports GPU encoding. This feature has resulted in 4-10x speed improvements during testing.
Flowblade 2.12 has removed the option for user-configurable toolsets for Timeline editing. The default toolset adequately covers the use cases of additional tools, making user-configurable ordering of tools no longer a key feature.
The development team has devoted a significant amount of time transitioning to using GTK 4. However, as GTK 4 deprecates many widgets and patterns utilized by Flowblade, it will require substantial time and effort to prepare for a potential port.
Flowblade 2.12 also introduces new filters (Unpremultiply, Grayscale Luminance, Copy Channel and Fade To Black In/Out), a keyboard shortcut for toggling track output on/off, a Replace Media in Project function, and a Zoom to mouse position feature. The update also includes minor features, changes, removals, and bug fixes.
