Thunderbird for Android faces delays as developers work to implement all needed features
Mozilla has recently published its progress report for November and December on the development of K-9 Mail, an Android email client soon to be rebranded as Thunderbird for Android. The app has now found a new home on the Google Play Store under the name “Mozilla Thunderbird”.
The latest release sees a shift in the user onboarding process, with permissions now requested during initial setup rather than upon accessing message lists or compose screens. This update also introduces an enhanced account setup, improved user experience, refined server settings screens, and various bug fixes.
However, a current issue for users of Android 14 performing a fresh install of K-9 Mail 6.712 or newer is that the push notification is not operational. This issue does not affect those upgrading from a previous version of K-9 Mail, as the necessary permission was automatically granted in the past. A fix for this problem is expected at the start of the upcoming year.
Despite initial plans to launch the app under its new name, Thunderbird for Android, in early 2024, the Thunderbird team has decided to delay the rebranding until all necessary features have been fully implemented. In the meantime, users can access all completed features by installing the stable version of K-9 Mail available now for testing.
