Threads is testing interoperability with Fediverse and getting its own fact-checkers

Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook's CEO, recently announced that Threads, the standalone microblogging app, is beginning a test to make posts from Threads accounts accessible on Mastodon and other services that utilize the ActivityPub protocol. According to Zuckerberg, “Making Threads interoperable will give people more choice over how they interact and it will help content reach more people.”

Despite the positive reception from Threads users, the announcement has elicited mixed reactions from the Mastodon community. A significant number of Mastodon instance administrators have expressed concerns, with some threatening to block the Threads instance. The primary reason for this resistance is the desire among many Fediverse users to distance themselves from mainstream social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter, which they perceive as invasive and monopolistic.

In related news, Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, has revealed plans to expand their fact-checking program on Threads next year. Currently, Threads relies on fact-check ratings from Facebook and Instagram, but the aim is to enable fact-checking partners to review and rate misinformation directly on the app. The implementation of this program is part of Instagram's ongoing efforts to combat the spread of misinformation on its platforms.
