Plex launches 'Discover Together' feature, transforming from streaming hub to community
Plex has unveiled a new social feature named "Discover Together", which kinda transform it from a simple streaming platform to a community-driven streaming/social network for film and media enthusiasts service. Users can now create profiles, connect with friends, and discover new shows and movies. Initially introduced for beta testing last summer, the feature has been expanded and updated for a wider audience.
The new feature includes a "Discover" tab that showcases popular content across Plex and the user's streaming services, while the "Discover Together" feature allows users to add friends, view their watchlist, bookmark content, and see their friends' ratings, thereby enhancing the platform's social aspect. Other changes includes the "Profile" tab, which enables users to establish their social networking identity, upload a profile photo, add a bio, and manage privacy settings. The "People" tab helps users find new friends based on name, location, or shared interests, allowing for the expansion of their social network.
With these changes and a new focus, we could say that the platform is positioning itself to compete with other online film and TV communities such as Trakt.tv or Letterboxd.
