Microsoft introduces compact mode for Xbox PC app to enhance handheld gaming experience
After a testing period, Microsoft has introduced a "compact mode" for the Xbox PC app available to all users, and designed to improve the user experience for handheld gaming PCs. The main feature of this mode is the transformation of the sidebar into collapsible icons, reducing its screen footprint. The mode is specifically tailored for handheld gaming devices like Asus’ ROG Ally and Lenovo’s Legion Go.
The Xbox PC app now shows only unread notifications in the drop-down menu, with a new "Gaming Services Repair Tool" for issue resolution during game launches. Microsoft is also working side by side with Asus and other manufacturers to make Compact mode the default on handheld devices, mirroring the streamlined experience seen on the Steam Deck with Proton (the biggest alternative at the moment), and eliminating the need for interaction with the Windows 11 interface on handhelds.
The update also includes an option for Xbox console users to choose a specific Japanese keyboard layout, providing more customization and accessibility for a broader range of users.
