WordPress.com officially supports ActivityPub, expanding blog reach to Federated platforms

Just under a month ago, we reported that self-hosted WordPress blogs could be followed in the Fediverse via the ActivityPub plugin. Now, we have news that WordPress.com now also officially supports the ActivityPub plugin, allowing blogs hosted on the platform to be followed on federated platforms such as Mastodon.

ActivityPub enables interaction between social networks across different platforms, eliminating the need for multiple accounts. WordPress.com users can use the plugin to follow publishers on other federated platforms, with responses from these platforms automatically becoming comments on WordPress posts, thus encouraging engagement with audiences outside of WordPress.

The ActivityPub feature is available across all WordPress.com plans, including free, personal, and premium, paving the way for millions of blogs to join the Fediverse. This comes as traditional social networks face competition from alternative platforms like the already mentioned Mastodon, Bluesky, and even Threads which, despite being owned by Meta, has plans to integrate into the Fediverse sometime in the future.
