The game, which exists in the same battle royale genre as Fortnite Battle Royale, PUBG, and Call of Duty: Black Ops 4's Blackout mode, was surprise announced and released this past Monday, February 4th.

In addition to this quickly reached milestone, the free-to-play squad-based first person shooter also had 1 million concurrent players playing across the PC (via EA App), PlayStation 4, and Xbox One versions of the game.

The news was shared by Vince Zampella, the co-founder of the game's development studio Respawn Entertainment, a studio founded by the creators of the Call of Duty series previously best known for the Titanfall duology. In the announcement of the milestones, Zampella stated that the studio "knew it would be risky to take the franchise in this direction, to go free to play, and do a surprise launch," but were completely floored by the massive outpouring of players, stating that "never in our wildest dreams could we have expected the outpouring of support and positivity we’ve seen."

Apex Legends is available now digitally for PCs running Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. Respawn Entertainment is also working on a new entry in its Titanfall series as well as a game set in the iconic Star Wars universe called Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order.
