Open-source slopware

A list of open-source software containing slop (LLM generated) code or endorses the usage of LLMs in other ways.

This list contains software that obviously accepts irresponsible coding practices or promotes LLM usage. I found these applications while searching for alternatives to previously used software that turned out to contain code generated by slop-machines.

Each of added applications have at least one link that points to the verifiable proof.

This list by no means is meant to cover all the software that contains code by not-so-intelligent tools and people using them but to serve as a reminder to myself about what I have already checked.

Also, I have created 3 labels that can be voted for so they would appear on application pages:

  • Slopware;
  • Slop (LLM) code;
  • Contains slop (LLM generated) code.

Why having LLM generated code (and using generative tools in general) is bad?

  • Ethical reasons - such as illegally retrieved training material, underpaid workers that prepare training data.
  • Impact on environment - increased fossil fuel usage to supply the needed electricity power, water usage in water scarce regions. This somewhat overlaps with the above.
  • Social impact - noise pollution in neighborhoods near AI data centers, air pollution from diesel- or gas-powered turbines (also overlaps with the above), drastically increasing utility prices.
  • Impact on brain and thinking, reasoning - by offloading thinking and decision making to machines people are shooting in their foot (more like in their head). Less intelligent people are easier to control.
  • Even legal issues (especially in open-source software as it cannot be guaranteed that the "generated" code is not really just re-used, thus unknowingly violating the source license).
  • Inevitable enshittification - every software product from big technology eventually gets enshittified to maximize revenue. For users this could mean hidden or plain ads, biased opinions/information, privacy violations, increased prices.

Of course, I see how and where generative tools could be helpful and sometimes I feel tempted to find an acceptable way to use them, but for now the direct and indirect costs far too much outweighs gains.

  1. I have used mailcow: dockerized for quite long time, and overall this is a very nice and easy way to set up a self-hosted email server (if one do not mind working with Docker/containers), but unfortunately slop got into it.

Question: You know there are people who have learned to code from using AI Models and such, and would have never really been able to do that otherwise because of the attitudes and territorial behavior of some "quote devs" who seem to be more butt-hurt by the idea of anyone else being able to do what they are trying to do which is write or create programs for yourself or your family or whoever.

I know there are people who just throw something together with a AI Model and go all out with it. And I can understand the recklessness in that and thats a valid concern. And their are also people who actually learn from their usage of AI in the area of writing Code. For example in my case I learned most of what I do know from AI, but I also have taken everything that I do and I always have typed it out by hand over and over again many many times in the attempt to let it sink in where I am able to do things or start a personal project without having the AI hold my hand thourgh the whole thing. Whereas I would only need to consult with the AI less and less to where I am able to do it all myself without assistance. I dont see anything wrong at all with that approach. Now I also understand the other side of it which would be the careless use and reckless pursuance of just letting the AI write it all and the person not knowing crap about any of it just dropping it on a platform and declaring it a software or a tool--well I can totally understand why that would be a concern. But there are people who actually are trying to better themselves by learning how to code at least a few things. Not everyone is doing that. --But I am. I am simply trying to learn how to code a few things for myself and Im sure there are many others who are doing the same. A person creates a bad name for themself when they do wreckless things that negatively affect others indirectly or claim things that dont belong to them, such as "I wrote that and this and so on", and then try and do a full profit off that.

But for me I had no one with the time to sit down and teach me anything, so I have had to read and read and so I used the LLM as a means of trying to piece the stuff together so that it made some kinda sense to my brain, to me it was the only way to learn how to do anything because it was available to show me or answer questions. And for me that has been very valuable and my goal from the beginning was to learn how to do afew things and a person cannot do that by copy pasting what the LLM provides, because you dont learn anything that way. So i would type out by hand and still do about 85 % because when I do that enough times, parts that didnt make sense at all before, some of those start to make sense and that continues to grow with that approach for me. And so less and less do i need to consult the LLM to anser a question or provide a example to what it is im trying to do. For me im always trying to branch out and be better, and I use it as a tool for that, ive only been at it a couple of years, im still learning. So have I put out anything yet? No I have not. Not bcuz I couldnt have the LLMwrite it up, its because Im the one who needs to write it up, because I have to be the one to maintain it, otherwise whats the point of putting something out that barley works and is full of security holes.. I get it, and again there are many reasons why I have not put anything out yet. If I put something out then it needs to work right like it says and i need to be able to maintain it. So thats the main reason why I havent put out anything. I dont want to put out garbage, or act like im somebody that I am not...

But I totally get what Your saying and on the surface it looks probaly to some as offensive or whatever, which at first was how I took it. But then i said wait a minute, why is he saying it like that aside from ego or pride or whatever, who cares about that, we are all prideful and have egos, nothing wrong with that, that keeps a person productive in whatever their doing. Self confidence, gotta have it. But i said to myself why such abrasiveness to this, and I get it after giving it some thought. There are always gonna be people who try to take the glory for things that they didnt earn. There are also people like myself who are just trying to better themselves by utilizing whatever resources are available to do so. Didnt mean to be so long winded. And im not saying that your wrong about what your saying. What your saying has alot of merit and is concerning. So take that however ya want. Peace!

Looks like you beat me to it!

Here are a couple other examples of vibe coded trash you may want to add to your list:

Em-Dash: A replacement for wordpress vibecoded by Cloudflare.

Zed: Text editor created by the creators of Atom. Leans heavily into vibecoding, the repo shows both Claude and Agents .md files and the tool includes AI coding integrations. Gram was created as a fork which discourages AI generated code in protest and removed all these components.

Bun: Formerly Zig application which was fully rewritten in Rust using vibecoding.

I guess you could call everything done by Salesforce vibecoded trash too since they openly brag that 50%+ of their code is now written by AI.
