In case you only have to display a message, and do not want to need a large part of the gnome environment.
Xmessage displays a (GUI) window containing a message from the command line, a file, or standard input (from its man page). It is pretty basic and won't win any beauty contests, but it gets the job done and has quite a few handy options.
