Gotten better over time.

App now gives more granular control over video watching. For example, you can restrict it to allow only channels you pre-approve. They've made this process way easier in the past year. Just activate it, then go search for channels (it will temporarily lift any age restrictions; still blocks content that wouldn't show up on YT Kids anyway), and then you can manually add in those channels as approved channels. Finish, and the app goes back to showing only content from those approved channels.

This works great if you're a parent concerned about what the kid watches. But at the moment one problem is not all kid-friendly channels will appear in YT Kids searches, even in the temporary parent login state. For example, Reading Rainbow now has full episodes on their official channel, but for some reason the official channel won't show up in a YT Kids search. Maybe that's fixed by the time you read this. Probably related to some setting the RR channel admins forgot to set.

Also, as expected, only works with online internet connection. So if you want YouTube Kids content offline, better to download some videos as a backup using one of the Tube downloading sites (AlternativeTo provides some nice examples...)
