Best free email service!
Beware, free offer plan is for limited countries, it includes 20GB of storage. Phone number needed for registration.
I don't believe the service (along with the Infomaniak suite) can be recommended anymore as a "privacy-oriented" alternative to Gmail, since now its spokesperson has shown support for Switzerland's controversial surveillance and encryption laws, as well as being against anonymity. In short, it has plans now to track users and collect user data, effectively breaking its initial promise to not do so. Have a nice, long read:
I already had to personally bash it for its questionable onboarding (account creation) process, noting five months ago about how you need to provide Infomaniak the following information (besides the obvious password):
But then four months later, the process surprisingly became even more questionable for me thanks to one user on Reddit noting about this last step that requires you to... dial a number? I don't think that's how it works; see, Infomaniak is supposed to call YOU, not YOU call Infomaniak. More reasonably, the service is supposed to send you a text message with a code to confirm verification. And the fact that you also (likely) need a personal ID makes all this awfully concerning. https://reddit.com/r/Infomaniak/comments/1kjmnmt/new_account_onboarding_you_lost_me_at_the_last/
You'd at least be surprised to find that the suite supports 15 GB of cloud storage (kDrive) and 20 GB for emails (kMail), all for free, so if you happen to not care about protecting your data and just wanna switch from Google or Microsoft, then go for it, by all means. Otherwise, you're better off leaning towards Proton's ecosystem as it plans to make amends to relocating...
I've been a happy Infomaniak customer for years. I use it for my emails, my calendars, my contacts, my drive, etc., and it's a good solution that can be used as a privacy-focused alternative to Google, Microsoft, and other similar companies.
An alternative to Gmail suite.
Infomaniak offers cheap webshosting and domain names in places like Switzerland. The privacy is not as solid as something like Protonmail, but you don't have the problems of banks denying you service for using it, and they don't make you pay just to use something like Thunderbird.
Infomaniak Suite offers a lot more now, such as end-to-end encrypted messages and files. I just wish the email itself could be end-to-end encrypted easily like ProtonMail to ProtonMail.
