Windows X-server based on the xorg git sources (like xming or cygwin's xwin), but compiled with Visual C++ 2010. Source code can also be compiled with VS2008, VS2008 Express Edition and VS2010 Express Edition.

Open source X server for Windows, active project. Works very well with Windows Subsystem for Linux.

I researched all the alternatives. They are either tricky with lots of cognitive load (Cygwin/X) or ultimately quite expensive (the two popular-for-corporates offerings) if you want any kind of flexibility. VcXsrv "works" and is very "simple". Even though the documentation is sparse in the extreme. We use it to access a VPS, along with Putty, from Windows 7. Worth trying if you want to focus on business and your new VPS apps.

Another criteria -- VCXsrv is also active, measured by update activity in 2016. Thanks to the team for the work.
