What is Umbrel?
A beautiful personal server OS for self-hosting. Run a personal server in your home, self-host open source apps like Nextcloud and Bitcoin node, break away from big tech, and take full control of your data. For free. Install on a Raspberry Pi 4 or Ubuntu/Debian.
All of our interactions on the internet today are mediated by a few companies who offer “free” services in exchange for storing our data on their servers to spy on us.
Running a personal server fundamentally changes that. You and your family’s photos, videos, files, notes, passwords — everything, have nothing to do with someone else’s computer. They’re a part of your private life, and now they can all be stored by you, on your personal server.
You can:
- Run your private cloud with Nextcloud.
- Store your photos and videos with PhotoPrism.
- Run your personal Bitcoin node.
- Block ads on your entire network with Pi-hole.
- Automate your home with Home Assistant.
- Magically access your Umbrel from anywhere.
- Of course, there’s an entire freaking app store.
- And much more!
Comments and Reviews
Not actually open source. It's using some sort of non commercial license (polyform license is not OSI or FSF approved for very obvious reasons) that makes them the only ones who can profit despite them taking lots of community contributions.
