What is Tomoshi?

Tomoshi is a Japanese-English dictionary built for producing Japanese, not just decoding it. Type Japanese, kana, romaji or English and candidates appear as you type; 210,000+ entries with English-to-Japanese reverse lookup for when you know the word in English and need the Japanese.

Each entry shows English definitions, part of speech, reading, pitch accent with a pitch curve, a conjugation table and example sentences with furigana. Beyond the definition, Tomoshi shows what you need to use the word correctly: transitive/intransitive pairs side by side with matching examples, notes on how near-synonyms differ and which one fits which situation, and notes on what each kanji spelling of the same word is used for.

Save entries to a wordbook and review them on a spaced-repetition schedule, including listen-only drills. Paste a whole sentence for an AI grammar breakdown where every word links back to the dictionary; when the model is not sure, it says so instead of inventing an explanation. Entries and sentences can be read aloud with cloud-synthesised voices.

Available for Windows, macOS, iOS and Android, with a browser extension for Chrome and Edge that looks up words on any web page (the extension is open source under AGPL and works together with the desktop app). A static web edition is at dict.tomoshi.app.

After the first launch downloads the dictionary data, core lookup works offline. No account, no ads, no third-party analytics; lookup history and the wordbook stay on your device.

Looking words up is free and will stay free. Cloud features (AI explanations and cloud speech) are free today within a daily quota and will move to paid to cover their server cost. I am an independent developer and would rather state that rule from day one.
