I've been using Stalwart Mail Server for almost two years now across five different domains, and it has become my primary self-hosted mail solution.
The 0.15 releases could sometimes feel challenging to manage, especially for advanced configurations, but the progress made with the 0.16 branch has been outstanding. The new WebUI is a huge improvement, and the addition of a dark theme was a very welcome change for daily administration.
What impressed me the most is the amount of work that went into version 0.16. The project moved to a unified JMAP-based management model, gained a completely new CLI, automated DNS management, automatic DKIM key rotation, API keys with granular permissions and restrictions, and support for modern identity providers such as Keycloak, Authentik, and Authelia. These are features that significantly simplify the operation of a production mail server.
I also appreciate the transparency of the developer. Communication is always professional and honest. He openly says that the project is getting closer to version 1.0 while acknowledging that no software is ever completely free of bugs. That level of honesty inspires confidence.
Another major advantage is that Stalwart is written in Rust, which contributes to excellent performance, low resource usage, and a strong focus on reliability and security. Despite its lightweight footprint, it includes an impressive amount of functionality out of the box that would normally require several separate services.
I highly recommend Stalwart to anyone looking for a modern, efficient, and feature-rich self-hosted mail server. Whether you're hosting one domain or many, it offers an excellent balance between performance, simplicity, and powerful built-in features.
