What is Sprigo?

Sprigo is an open-source, local-first language learning app for desktop that combines structured courses with AI-powered lessons, speaking practice, stories, roleplay, and live conversations.

Unlike most AI language learning services, Sprigo can run its AI stack directly on your computer. It supports local LLMs through Ollama and LM Studio, while cloud providers such as OpenAI, Anthropic, and Gemini can also be used optionally with your own API key.

Sprigo includes a structured English course from A1 to C2, with AI-generated exercises that adapt to recent mistakes. Activities include translation, listening, fill-in-the-blank, word banks, matching, error correction, speaking exercises, timed challenges, and mastery lessons.

One of its core features is Live Lesson, a video-call-style conversation with an animated AI tutor. Learners can speak naturally, interrupt the tutor while it is talking, follow live captions, and open interactive exercises during the conversation.

Speech recognition can run locally using whisper.cpp. For text-to-speech, Sprigo supports local Piper and Kokoro voices as well as system voices. This allows speaking practice to work without sending voice recordings to an external AI service. Deepgram is available as an optional cloud speech provider.

Beyond structured lessons, Sprigo offers AI-generated stories, real-life roleplay scenarios, mistake review, vocabulary practice, listening and speaking exercises, and several gamification features including XP, coins, daily quests, streaks, leagues, and a garden that grows as the learner progresses.

Sprigo is designed around local ownership and privacy. Learning progress is stored in a local SQLite database, API keys are kept in the operating system's keychain, and users can export, import, back up, or relocate their data. Multiple learner profiles can share the same computer.

The application is built with Tauri, React, TypeScript, and Rust and is available for macOS, Windows, and Linux.

Sprigo is free and open source under the MIT license.
