ownCloud is a PARTIAL SpiderOak alternative. Through oC's client you can backup and sync files. Typically, oC is run on your own server. This means only your hard disk limits the storage space, and your files belong to you. But oC doesn't encrypt your files in the "zero-knowledge" way, which SpiderOak does. SO costs money; oC doesn't unless you get a hosted version. Use oC with Cryptomator to maximize privacy/security.
