Historically speaking, this was the app for testing a connection and its speed. Since the takeover, the front-end is heavy on resources and I think the ads are the major contributor here. Possibly they need to optimise the code as well.
My expectation for a speed test is to have a minimalistic front-end and no ads at all. Given that ads introduce cookies and trackers, more and more users have an adblocker. This will add to the contention of loading the page.
In its favour I like that you...

This thing has been such a great tool for me. Found out that my ISP was actually providing me with way slower net speeds than what they promised. Managed to get a big discount on the newt 6 months of my plan because of it
Site use to be really good the new design is crap. Now you can not select the location or server you want to use to run a test and you can not view the site with a adblocker running you have to disable every one that is running lame. I am done with this site any site where it asks me to disable adblock I will never view again.

In its favour I like that you can create an account to track the history of speed tests, and that the speed tests are pretty good. But remember to run the test a number of times ensuring nothing else is taking the bandwidth (like a large file upload/download) to get a better view on the internet speed.
It's great! I personally try to use LibreSpeed because it's less bloated and open source. But yeah, Ookla is lit, and the site looks very good.
The test has proved it can be trusted unlike its less mainstream contenders
When ever I think to check my internet speed and I visit this site I am unable to load the site in one go, it took time to load the website it self... :(. Test results are good.
This has always been my go-to app for testing network speeds.
