What is SpawnWP?
SpawnWP is a free and open-source, self-hosted WordPress sandbox and development lab designed for creating disposable, isolated WordPress environments on infrastructure you control.
It turns a fresh Debian or Ubuntu server into a remotely accessible WordPress development platform. Each environment runs as an isolated containerized stack with its own Nginx, PHP-FPM, MariaDB, Mailpit and Adminer services, allowing developers to create, test, reset, snapshot, restore and destroy WordPress installations without relying on a hosted SaaS control plane.
SpawnWP includes a web-based cockpit for everyday management, with support for multiple PHP versions, a built-in file browser, environment lifecycle controls and development-oriented blueprints. Its development toolkit can include WordPress Plugin Check, Theme Check, PHPCS with WordPress Coding Standards, PHPStan and Query Monitor.
For users who prefer automation or terminal-based workflows, SpawnWP also provides a CLI and per-site Makefile commands for tasks such as WP-CLI, Composer, npm, snapshots, restores, Xdebug and PHP switching.
Because SpawnWP runs entirely on your own server, there are no per-site subscriptions, artificial environment limits or mandatory cloud accounts. The runtime remains under the user's control and the project is distributed under the MIT License.
An optional SpawnWP Deploy WordPress plugin can also be used to transfer a completed site from a SpawnWP environment to a separate WordPress installation.
SpawnWP is primarily intended for WordPress development, testing, plugin/theme QA, experimentation and demos, rather than as a general-purpose production hosting control panel.
