What is SpaceSniffer?
SpaceSniffer is a tool application that gives you an idea of how folders and files are structured on your disks. By using a Treemap visualization layout, you have immediate perception of where big folders and files are situated on your devices. If you need to understand why no more free space is left on media, keep following bigger elements. Maybe you want to focus only on particular file types... ok. Just type the file type on the filter field (example: .jpg) and press enter. The view will react and show you only JPEG files. Want to exclude files? Then type a starting pipe before the filter (example: |.jpg) and press enter. The view will show everything but JPEG files.
If you want to keep track of examined files you can tag them. Four colors are available. You can also filter on tags (example: :red will show only red tagges files, :all will show all tagged files and so on). You can also exclude tagged files (example: |:red will exclude all red tagged files)
Want to know if you have old files? Type the condition in the filter field (example: >2years) and the view will react accordingly.
You can also filter on file size, file date and combine all filters (example: *.jpg;>1mb;<3months;|:yellow)

Comments and Reviews
Free, Fast speed, visualization scheme is effective and modern, high customization
It's 2023 and still the best tool for visualizing your disk space and folders size.
Too sad is it's abandoned...
Very simple UI. Easy to use.
Love you long time ❤️
Best and actually only disk usage viewer I ever used. I am sure it lacks features when it comes to the more famous WinDirStart, but honestly I prefer the UI of this one, as well as it's default colours. I have used this app countless times for myself and friends, to find out what takes a lot of space on my HDD or specific folders and accordingly either delete things taking useless space or just be aware of them.
Throughout the years I have also used a handful of times, probably able to count them in one hand, Treesize. It was to check the size of folders on a specific folder, but instead of looking what takes the most space, I wanted to see actual file size for each and every folder.
If I would recommend Spacesniffer for something, that would be for finding large folders/files and quickly pinpointing what is taking your space, as its plain and soft coloured graphical UI, is definitely the best out there for me.
It allows you to not only see the directory and file names by NAME inside the graph, but also directly manipulate them. You can literally delete and move them from the graph.
This is unlike other tools that just sort of show them and you have to mouse over (or worse, click) them to see what they are, and heaven forbid you do any manipulation of them in the graph.
Also, it acts just like Windows Explorer, updating whenever files are updated externally. It also performs a smooth flash animation when an update occurs. You can leave it running while you do all your cleaning up.
There's nothing like it on Linux, which is a big problem. I've switched to Linux recently and I seriously need something as good as SpaceSniffer to manage my storage.
While WinDirStat is open source and I try to use OS where I can, I simply prefer SpaceSniffer. It seems to run faster, immediately building the tree map, and presents it with an aesthetic I prefer.
