This is the best open source sms-only app alternative I found, and comes with end to end encryption!
Signal only seems to be available on the Google Play Store, and requires Google Play Services to function correctly. So, when I switched to LineageOS on my Android phone, without any Google services, Silence has been my go-to messaging app, as it doesn't require Google to function.
signal can work without Google play service, but more battery hungry .
unfortunately, Signal is not available through F-Droid due to some disagreements about the way it works from Signal developers: https://forum.f-droid.org/t/signal-in-f-droid-in-2018/2847
but they already offer a way to get it from outside the the Play Store through https://signal.org/android/apk/ although the main developer doesn't recommend it to the average user
still, i use Signal for internet messaging and Silence for sms, since i use different SIM cards from different countries and want to keep the two separated without hassle. they're both great open source apps
